Professional Dimensions of Teaching II - EDTS 234

Winter 2017 - Final Grade: A+

This course investigates the evolution of schooling through historical and personal perspectives as well as possible future developments and their impact on education.  Students will explore philosophical orientations to teaching, the structure of classrooms and schools, the purpose and function of curriculum, the role of the teacher in this context and being the process of constructing their own philosophical statement of belief and learning and teaching.  A key outcome of this course is the development of a professional teaching portfolio.  Field experiences involving diverse school environments are a required component of this course.

The Novel and The Short Story - ENGL 231

Winter 2017 - Final Grade: A+

This course provides an introduction to fiction in both the short story and novel forms.  Instruction in critical writing is part of this course. The main focus of the class was on two opposing novels; Rudyard Kipling's Kim and Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient. Insightful analysis of plots, symbols, themes, and characters, as well as ability to think deeply and make connections was critical to success in this course. 

Ancient Peoples and Places - ARKY 205

Winter 2017 - Final Grade: A

An overview of Old and New World archaeology; the emergence of humans; and the development of humans and culture from hunting/gathering to agricultural and ancient urban societies. Over the course of the semester, two article reviews and one final research paper were completed regarding a specific topic on archaeology we chose. The class also contained a trip to a site by the Medicine Hat tepee which we explored for a mock survey.

Introduction to Biology II - BIOL 233

Winter 2017 - Final Grade: A-

This course examines the evolutionary biology, phylogeny, and organismic biology of plants, and animals. In the laboratory, various taxons are introduced with a focus on the diversity, form, and function of plants and major Metazoan phyla. The course included a lab portion where plant and animal structure and function were examined.

General Chemistry II - CHEM 203

Winter 2017 - Final Grade: B

This course features both lecture and laboratory work for instruction. Lecture: An extension of CHEM 201 with an emphasis on acid-base and solubility equilibria; thermodynamics; oxidation-reduction concepts and electrochemistry; chemical kinetics and nuclear chemistry. Laboratory: Experiments are designed to illustrate the lecture material and to develop skill in using basic laboratory equipment. Weekly quizzes ensure constant effort throughout the semester.
